Resting on a rope bed in the masjid
Question
Question: A certain scholar says that it is impermissible to sleep in the masjid with a rope bed (an Indian bed on legs with a woven top) set up, whether one is a traveller or in iʿtikaf. Is this correct?
Answer
That the noble Prophet ﷺ had a bed (sarir) in the masjid during iʿtikaf and rested on it is clearly mentioned in the hadiths. Therefore, to call it impermissible is wrong. However, nowadays, by custom (ʿurf), this causes aversion (tawahhush) among the common people. On this basis, if caution is exercised, that is appropriate.
