Making jewellery from lead plated with gold or silver

Question

People have jewellery made of lead (?) and have it coated with gold or silver. Is it permissible for men and women to use it or not? May a man use a ring and buttons of it or not?

Answer

Plating it with gold or silver, having jewellery made from it and using it is permissible for women. For a man, only one ring is permitted, within the prescribed measure of weight, and that too of silver. For a button, since it is subordinate to the garment, there is latitude: it is permitted for men too.
