Food from Hindu festivals
Question
Question: If the relatives of some Muslim live in a Hindu village, and on the Hindu festivals — Holi (the spring festival of colours), Diwali (the festival of lights) and the like — they cook festive dishes: fried flatbreads, kachori (fried stuffed pastries) and the like, is it permissible for us to eat their food or not?
Answer
Taking part in the Hindu festivals — Holi, Diwali and the like — is by no means permissible; it is necessary to repent of it, because it is a major sin (kabira), so much so that some jurists have written that it is disbelief (kufr).
