Compensation for clothing lost by a washerman
Question
Question: If a washerman lost a garment in the river, may compensation be taken from him or not?
Answer
If the garment was lost through the washerman’s carelessness, then taking compensation (daman) from him is permissible. But if the washerman was helpless — the water suddenly rose, and despite his efforts he could not safeguard it — then there is no liability upon him.
