Gyarahwin and the Like
Question
Zayd holds a Gyarahwin (the monthly eleventh-day commemoration in honour of ‘Abd al-Qadir Jilani ﵀) and invites to it the rich — that is, those liable to zakat — and his relatives; he says that there is reward in it and that its reward will reach the soul of Hazrat Piran-e Pir (‘guide of guides’) ‘Abd al-Qadir Jilani ﵀.
Answer
Conveying reward in itself — without binding oneself to a date, a form and the like — is correct according to the Sacred Law and beneficial. However, the customary Gyarahwin is a bid‘a and impermissible; making a vow (nadhr) for any saint is haram and shirk, and eating such food is not permissible.
