Provisions for the Deceased
Question
Is it established in the Sacred Law to have fatiha read every Thursday — [it is said] that the souls are gladdened by it — and likewise the “provisions” of the deceased, that is, distributing wheat, salt, soap and the like before the burial?
Answer
Isal al-thawab (conveying reward to the deceased) in itself — without any restriction not established [in the Sacred Law] — is useful and beneficial, and is established from the books of hadith and fiqh. Binding oneself to a particular day, for instance Thursday, is not established; rather, it is bid‘a (an innovation in religion).
