Does Praying Maghrib in a Certain Mosque for Four Years Earn the Reward of Hajj?

Question

Since the time of Hazrat Shah Nizam al-Din Bhikari, the Maghrib prayer has been performed near his shrine, inside the river [bed]; the khatib of the Congregational Mosque leads the Maghrib prayer. People travel from far away for this, and it has been made widely known that if one performs the Maghrib prayer there for four years or seven years, one obtains the reward of one Hajj. Is it permissible to pray in this way, to lead such prayer, and to hold such a belief? Is there any basis for it in the Qur’an and Hadith?

Answer

(1) This practice is baseless: it has no foundation in the Sacred Law. A specific reward is expressly stated in the hadiths for three mosques: (1) al-Masjid al-Haram, (2) al-Masjid al-Nabawi, (3) al-Masjid al-Aqsa.
