E420 Sorbitol — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

A polyol made by catalytic hydrogenation (or electrolytic reduction) of glucose or glucose syrup from starch, and per Roquette and DSM patents from sucrose. Possible links: sucrose and bone char of refining; starch-hydrolysis enzymes of unnamed producer; activated carbon (bone char possible); lactose in a historical patent.

Basis of the ruling

Sorbitol is a polyol made by catalytic hydrogenation or electrolytic reduction of glucose or glucose syrup from starch, and in some patents from sucrose. To obtain the glucose the starch is hydrolysed; one manufacturer uses enzymes for this — alpha-amylase and amyloglucosidase — whose producer organism is not named.
