The Holy Quran 8:43 — Surah Al-Anfal

Arabic text

إِذْ يُرِيكَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ فِى مَنَامِكَ قَلِيلًا ۖ وَلَوْ أَرَىٰكَهُمْ كَثِيرًا لَّفَشِلْتُمْ وَلَتَنَـٰزَعْتُمْ فِى ٱلْأَمْرِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَلَّمَ ۗ إِنَّهُۥ عَلِيمٌۢ بِذَاتِ ٱلصُّدُورِ

Translation

(O Muhammad, remember the time) When Allaah showed you in your dream that they (the Mushrikeen) were few in number (thereby giving encouragement to the Mu'mineen). If He had showed you that they were many in number, you (the Mu'mineen) would have lost courage and disputed about the issue (about whether to fight or not). However Allaah saved you (from losing courage and from disputing among yourselves). Undoubtedly He has (profound) knowledge of what is in the hearts (of all).

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

واذكر -أيها النبي- حينما أراك الله قلة عدد عدوك في منامك، فأخبرت المؤمنين بذلك، فقوِيت قلوبهم، واجترؤوا على حربهم، ولو أراك ربك كثرة عددهم لتردد أصحابك في ملاقاتهم، وجَبُنتم واختلفتم في أمر القتال، ولكن الله سلَّم من الفشل، ونجَّى من عاقبة ذلك. إنه عليم بخفايا القلوب وطبائع النفوس.
