The Holy Quran 60:1 — Surah Al-Mumtahanah

Arabic text

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَتَّخِذُوا۟ عَدُوِّى وَعَدُوَّكُمْ أَوْلِيَآءَ تُلْقُونَ إِلَيْهِم بِٱلْمَوَدَّةِ وَقَدْ كَفَرُوا۟ بِمَا جَآءَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْحَقِّ يُخْرِجُونَ ٱلرَّسُولَ وَإِيَّاكُمْ ۙ أَن تُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ رَبِّكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ خَرَجْتُمْ جِهَـٰدًا فِى سَبِيلِى وَٱبْتِغَآءَ مَرْضَاتِى ۚ تُسِرُّونَ إِلَيْهِم بِٱلْمَوَدَّةِ وَأَنَا۠ أَعْلَمُ بِمَآ أَخْفَيْتُمْ وَمَآ أَعْلَنتُمْ ۚ وَمَن يَفْعَلْهُ مِنكُمْ فَقَدْ ضَلَّ سَوَآءَ ٱلسَّبِيلِ

Translation

)Referring to the time when Haatib bin Abi Balta'ah رضي الله تعالى عنه attempted to reveal confidential information to the Mushrikeen, Allaah says,) O you who have Imaan! Do not take My enemy and your enemy as friends, offering your friendship to them when they reject the truth (of Islaam) that has come to you. They have driven out the Rasool ﷺ and yourselves (from Makkah simply) because you believe in Allaah as your Rabb. If you emerge to strive (in Jihaad) in My path and to seek My pleasure (you would not befriend the Kuffaar). You secretly show friendship to them (by passing confidential information on to them) when I am Aware of what you conceal and what you reveal. (How is this possible when you know that Allaah has knowledge of your doings?) The one who does this from among you has certainly strayed from the straight path.

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

يا أيها الذين صدَّقوا الله ورسوله وعملوا بشرعه، لا تتخذوا عدوي وعدوكم خلصاء وأحباء، تُفْضون إليهم بالمودة، فتخبرونهم بأخبار الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم، وسائر المسلمين، وهم قد كفروا بما جاءكم من الحق من الإيمان بالله ورسوله وما نزل عليه من القرآن، يخرجون الرسول ويخرجونكم -أيها المؤمنون- من «مكة»
