The Holy Quran 4:92 — Surah An-Nisa

Arabic text

وَمَا كَانَ لِمُؤْمِنٍ أَن يَقْتُلَ مُؤْمِنًا إِلَّا خَطَـًٔا ۚ وَمَن قَتَلَ مُؤْمِنًا خَطَـًٔا فَتَحْرِيرُ رَقَبَةٍ مُّؤْمِنَةٍ وَدِيَةٌ مُّسَلَّمَةٌ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِۦٓ إِلَّآ أَن يَصَّدَّقُوا۟ ۚ فَإِن كَانَ مِن قَوْمٍ عَدُوٍّ لَّكُمْ وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ فَتَحْرِيرُ رَقَبَةٍ مُّؤْمِنَةٍ ۖ وَإِن كَانَ مِن قَوْمٍۭ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَهُم مِّيثَـٰقٌ فَدِيَةٌ مُّسَلَّمَةٌ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِۦ وَتَحْرِيرُ رَقَبَةٍ مُّؤْمِنَةٍ ۖ فَمَن لَّمْ يَجِدْ فَصِيَامُ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ تَوْبَةً مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ عَلِيمًا حَكِيمًا

Translation

It is not for (not becoming of) a Mu'min to kill another Mu'min except (unless) by mistake. Whoever kills a Mu'min by mistake (unintentionally) has to set free a Mu'min slave and pay the Diyah to his (the deceased's) family, unless they are charitable (by pardoning the amount). If he (the murdered person) is from a nation that are enemies to you, but he is a Mu'min, then a Mu'min slave is to be set free. (However) If he (the murdered person) is from a nation with whom you have a pact, the Diyah (10,000 dirhams or 1000 dinars or 100 camels or its equivalent) is to be paid to his family (to his heirs) and a Mu'min slave is to be set free. The one who (killed the Mu'min by mistake and) cannot find a slave (to free) should fast for two consecutive months. (You will receive) Forgiveness (is) from Allaah (if you repent sincerely). Allaah is All Knowing, The Wise.

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

ولا يحق لمؤمن الاعتداء على أخيه المؤمن وقتله بغير حق، إلا أن يقع منه ذلك على وجه الخطأ الذي لا عمد فيه، ومن وقع منه ذلك الخطأ فعليه عتق رقبة مؤمنة، وتسليم دية مقدرة إلى أوليائه، إلا أن يتصدقوا بها عليه ويعفوا عنه.
