The Holy Quran 49:6 — Surah Al-Hujurat

Arabic text

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِن جَآءَكُمْ فَاسِقٌۢ بِنَبَإٍ فَتَبَيَّنُوٓا۟ أَن تُصِيبُوا۟ قَوْمًۢا بِجَهَـٰلَةٍ فَتُصْبِحُوا۟ عَلَىٰ مَا فَعَلْتُمْ نَـٰدِمِينَ

Translation

O you who have Imaan! If any sinner (or anyone else) brings you any news, then verify (investigate it to establish the truth) it, lest you should harm any nation unknowingly (because of being misinformed) and then become remorseful (regretful) over your actions. (In this manner, false news will be nipped in the bud.)

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

يا أيها الذين صدَّقوا الله ورسوله وعملوا بشرعه، إن جاءكم فاسق بخبر فتثبَّتوا من خبره قبل تصديقه ونقله حتى تعرفوا صحته؛ خشية أن تصيبوا قومًا برآء بجناية منكم، فتندموا على ذلك.
