The Holy Quran 43:49 — Surah Az-Zukhruf

Arabic text

وَقَالُوا۟ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَ ٱلسَّاحِرُ ٱدْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ بِمَا عَهِدَ عِندَكَ إِنَّنَا لَمُهْتَدُونَ

Translation

)As each punishment afflicted them,) They said (to Moosa عليه الصلاة والسلام), "O magician (used as a title of honour in those days)! On our behalf, pray to your Rabb for the covenant He has made with you (that He would remove the punishment if we accept Imaan). Then (when the punishment is removed) we will surely be rightly guided."

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

وقال فرعون وملؤه لموسى: يا أيها العالم -وكان الساحر فيهم عظيمًا يُوَقِّرونه ولم يكن السحر صفة ذم- ادع لنا ربك بعهده الذي عهد إليك وما خصَّك به من الفضائل أن يكشف عنا العذاب، فإن كشف عنا العذاب فإننا لمهتدون مؤمنون بما جئتنا به. فلما دعا موسى برفع العذاب عنهم، ورفعناه عنهم إذا هم يغدرون، ويصرُّون على ضلالهم.
