The Holy Quran 3:118 — Surah Ali 'Imran

Arabic text

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَتَّخِذُوا۟ بِطَانَةً مِّن دُونِكُمْ لَا يَأْلُونَكُمْ خَبَالًا وَدُّوا۟ مَا عَنِتُّمْ قَدْ بَدَتِ ٱلْبَغْضَآءُ مِنْ أَفْوَٰهِهِمْ وَمَا تُخْفِى صُدُورُهُمْ أَكْبَرُ ۚ قَدْ بَيَّنَّا لَكُمُ ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ ۖ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ

Translation

O you who have Imaan! Do not take as confidants (as intimate friends with whom you share secrets) those besides your own (Muslims). These (non-Muslim) people would spare no pains to ruin you (materially and spiritually). They wish for that which causes you suffering. Enmity (jealousy, hatred) has been made clear from their tongues, but what (enmity, malice, rage) their hearts conceal is far worse.(enmity, malice, rage, hatred) Indeed We have made the Aayaat clear to you if you will (attempt to) understand.

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

يا أيها الذين صدَّقوا الله ورسوله وعملوا بشرعه، لا تتخذوا الكافرين أولياء من دون المؤمنين، تُطْلعونهم على أسراركم، فهؤلاء لا يَفْتُرون عن إفساد حالكم، وهم يفرحون بما يصيبكم من ضرر ومكروه، وقد ظهرت شدة البغض في كلامهم، وما تخفي صدورهم من العداوة لكم أكبر وأعظم. قد بيَّنَّا لكم البراهين والحجج، لتتعظوا وتحذروا، إن كنتم تعقلون عن الله مواعظه وأمره ونهيه.
