The Holy Quran 33:13 — Surah Al-Ahzab

Arabic text

وَإِذْ قَالَت طَّآئِفَةٌ مِّنْهُمْ يَـٰٓأَهْلَ يَثْرِبَ لَا مُقَامَ لَكُمْ فَٱرْجِعُوا۟ ۚ وَيَسْتَـْٔذِنُ فَرِيقٌ مِّنْهُمُ ٱلنَّبِىَّ يَقُولُونَ إِنَّ بُيُوتَنَا عَوْرَةٌ وَمَا هِىَ بِعَوْرَةٍ ۖ إِن يُرِيدُونَ إِلَّا فِرَارًا

Translation

(Remember the time) When a group of them (Munaafiqeen) said, "O people of Yathrib (Madinah)! You cannot stand (against such a large and powerful enemy), so return (home)." A party of them (Munaafiqeen) sought permission from the Rasool ﷺ (to leave the battlefield) saying, "Our homes are exposed (to attack, so we have to be there to protect them in case the enemy attacks),' whereas they were not left exposed (unprotected). (By making this excuse), They sought only to desert (to flee).

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

واذكر -أيها النبي- قول طائفة من المنافقين منادين المؤمنين من أهل «المدينة» : يا أهل «يثرب» (وهو الاسم القديم «للمدينة» ) لا إقامة لكم في معركة خاسرة، فارجعوا إلى منازلكم داخل «المدينة» ، ويستأذن فريق آخر من المنافقين الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم بالعودة إلى منازلهم بحجة أنها غير محصنة، فيخشون عليها، والحق أنها ليست كذلك، وما قصدوا بذلك إلا الفرار من القتال.
