The Holy Quran 2:26 — Surah Al-Baqarah

Arabic text

۞ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَسْتَحْىِۦٓ أَن يَضْرِبَ مَثَلًا مَّا بَعُوضَةً فَمَا فَوْقَهَا ۚ فَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ فَيَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّهُ ٱلْحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّهِمْ ۖ وَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ فَيَقُولُونَ مَاذَآ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَـٰذَا مَثَلًا ۘ يُضِلُّ بِهِۦ كَثِيرًا وَيَهْدِى بِهِۦ كَثِيرًا ۚ وَمَا يُضِلُّ بِهِۦٓ إِلَّا ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ

Translation

Verily Allaah is not shy to quote the example of even a mosquito or something more (or less important). As for those who have Imaan, they know that it is the truth from their Rabb. As for the Kuffaar, they say, "What does Allaah intend with these examples (Of what use are they?)?" (The reply to their disrespectful question is that) Allaah causes many to be misguided by them (with these examples, Allaah causes many people to stray from the truth because of their kufr) and guides many with them (because of their Imaan, the Mu'mineen are rightly guided by these examples). Only the evil-doers (the Kuffaar) are misguided by them.

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

إن الله تعالى لا يستحيي من الحق أن يذكر شيئًا ما، قلَّ أو كثر، ولو كان تمثيلا بأصغر شيء، كالبعوضة والذباب ونحو ذلك، مما ضربه الله مثلا لِعَجْز كل ما يُعْبَد من دون الله. فأما المؤمنون فيعلمون حكمة الله في التمثيل بالصغير والكبير من خلقه، وأما الكفار فَيَسْخرون ويقولون: ما مراد الله مِن ضَرْب المثل بهذه الحشرات الحقيرة؟
