The Holy Quran 2:133 — Surah Al-Baqarah

Arabic text

أَمْ كُنتُمْ شُهَدَآءَ إِذْ حَضَرَ يَعْقُوبَ ٱلْمَوْتُ إِذْ قَالَ لِبَنِيهِ مَا تَعْبُدُونَ مِنۢ بَعْدِى قَالُوا۟ نَعْبُدُ إِلَـٰهَكَ وَإِلَـٰهَ ءَابَآئِكَ إِبْرَٰهِـۧمَ وَإِسْمَـٰعِيلَ وَإِسْحَـٰقَ إِلَـٰهًا وَٰحِدًا وَنَحْنُ لَهُۥ مُسْلِمُونَ

Translation

(When the Jews told Rasulullaah ﷺ that Ya'qoob عليه السلام advised his sons to remain devoted to Judaism, Allaah revealed the verse stating) Or were you (Jews) present when death presented itself before (when it came to) Ya'qoob عليه السلام? (Were you there) When he asked his sons, “What will you worship after my death?" They replied, "We will worship your Ilaah (Allaah) and the Ilaah of your forefathers Ibraheem عليه السلام, Ismaa'eel عليه السلام and Is'haaq عليه السلام, (we shall worship) Him Who is Only One Ilaah. We surrender to (obey and worship) Him only."

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

أكنتم -أيها اليهود- حاضرين حين جاء الموتُ يعقوبَ، إذ جمع أبناءه وسألهم ما تعبدون من بعد موتي؟ قالوا: نعبد إلهك وإله آبائك إبراهيم وإسماعيل وإسحاق إلهًا واحدًا، ونحن له منقادون خاضعون.
