Zakat in Madrasas
Question
(1) The people of the madrasas collect zakat and obligatory charities (sadaqat wajiba) for all the expenses of the madrasa on printed receipts bearing the madrasa’s name and address. This is their self-made ninth category of recipients (masraf). (2) The prevailing method of collecting zakat and obligatory charities by means of receipt books, posters, booklets, charts, calendars, reports and cards is not established from the noble Prophet ﷺ and the noble Companions ﵃. (3) There has nowhere been a consensus (ijma‘)
Answer
The obligation (fard) of zakat is established by the Holy Qur’an: in approximately thirty-two verses, together with the command to establish the prayer, there is also the command to give zakat. The Prophet ﷺ was commanded: [ar]خُذْ مِنْ أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ صَدَقَةً[/ar] “Take from their wealth a charity…” (Surah al-Tawba, 9:103).
