Zakat on the buffalo or on the milk
Question
Our buffalo is kept for trade, as its milk is sold. However, its grass and various types of feed, oil-cake, etc., are arranged by us ourselves; it does not graze freely. In this case, is zakat obligatory or not?
Answer
If the buffaloes themselves are objects of trade, then zakat is obligatory on them just like other trade goods. That is, after the completion of one year, one-fortieth (1/40) of the value of the buffaloes that are present at that time must be given as zakat.
