The Imamate of One Who Leads the Funeral Prayer for a Polytheist

Question

What is the status of the prayer behind a person who performs the funeral prayer (janaza) for a mushrik (polytheist)?

Answer

For one whose end came in shirk, it is categorically impermissible to pray for forgiveness or to perform his funeral prayer: [ar]مَا كَانَ لِلنَّبِىِّ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ أَن يَسْتَغْفِرُوا۟ لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ[/ar] “It is not for the Prophet and those who believe to seek forgiveness for the polytheists…” (Surah al-Tawba, 9:113).
