Conditions of imamate and selling hides without tanning
Question
A certain Muslim trades in hides without tanning and sits in the market. Can this person lead the prayer or not?
Answer
The imam should be a person of sound belief (‘aqida), who recites the Holy Qur’an correctly, knows the rulings of prayer and purification and follows the sunna. Selling and buying the hide of carrion without tanning is not permissible — such a sale is batil (void). To appoint as imam someone who carries on such a business is makruh tahrimi.
