Qualities of an Imam

Question

What qualities should a person who leads the prayer possess? If among the followers there is someone better in qualities than the one leading the prayer, is he required to step forward on his own and take the position of imam?

Answer

The imam should be more knowledgeable (a‘lam), better in recitation (aqra’), and more pious (awra‘); meaning he possesses greater knowledge of legal rulings, recites the Noble Qur’an correctly, follows the Shariah, and adheres to the Sunnah.
