Praying at Home Instead of at the Neighbourhood Mosque

Question

What is [the ruling on] not praying in the neighbouring mosque and praying at home instead?

Answer

Leaving the prayer in the mosque without a valid Shari‘a excuse and praying at home is a very great deprivation and the abandonment of a great emblem (sha‘ira) of Islam. In the noble hadith there is a severe threat (wa‘id) regarding it. In one hadith such a person’s prayer is declared to be of no account.
