Lending one rupee and taking back 18 annas
Question
Question: Zayd lent Bakr one rupee as a loan (qard) for a term of one year for his use, but when collecting the lent rupee from Bakr he takes eighteen annas (a coin worth 1/16 of a rupee) in money instead of one rupee. What is sought is whether the case described is permissible in the Shariʿa or not. Kindly write a satisfying answer with proofs.
Answer
This is interest, and therefore it is haram: [ar]أَحَلَّ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْبَيْعَ وَحَرَّمَ ٱلرِّبَوٰا۟ الآية[/ar] “Allah has permitted trade and forbidden riba…” (Surah al-Baqara, 2:275). [ar]كل قرض جر نفعًا حرام[/ar] “Every loan that draws a benefit is haram.”
