The Correct Letters of "Ghazir al-'Ilm" in the Khutba
Question
In the khutba [there occurs the expression] "ghazir al-'ilm"; [some say] "wasi' al-'ilm", [while others] hold that only the word "'azir" is meant. Which spelling is correct? Is it "'aziz" or "ghazir"? And what would the meaning of "'azir" be? Please favour [us] with an answer.
Answer
In the khutba it is [correctly] "ghazir al-'ilm" — that is, [the first letter is] ghayn (with a dot), not 'ayn (without a dot); then a dotted za; then ya; then ra without a dot. The meaning of this word is "abundant" and "deep".
