Imam ash-Shāfiʿī, may Allah have mercy on him (d. 204 AH)

Answer

Imam Muḥammad ibn Idrīs ash-Shāfiʿī was raised in extremely unfavorable circumstances and poverty; at times he could not even obtain paper on which to write his scholarly notes — he would write even on the bones of animals. At thirteen years of age he came into the service of Imam Mālik, having already memorized the Muwaṭṭaʾ; the following year he went to Iraq.
