A Distinctive Custom of the People of Kufa in Hearing Ḥadīth, and Its Bearing on Abū Ḥanīfah
Answer
The people of Kufa were, in matters of ḥadīth, exceedingly cautious. Khatib al-Baghdadi writes: [ar]إِنَّ أَهْلَ الْكُوفَةِ لَمْ يَكُنِ الْوَاحِدُ مِنْهُمْ يَسْمَعُ الْحَدِيثَ إِلَّا بَعْدَ اسْتِكْمَالِهِ عِشْرِينَ سَنَةً[/ar] "Indeed, none of the people of Kufa would hear ḥadīth except after completing twenty years of age" (al-Kifāyah, p. 54).
