Hoarding grain

Question

Question: (1) If at harvest time I buy grain worth a thousand or five hundred rupees and leave it stored at home, waiting to sell it dear out of the harvest season — the grain will then sell dear — what is the Shari‘a ruling about this? Also: (2) Many people buy grain and give it to people at whatever the rate is at that time, and when the harvest comes they take from them at whatever the rate is then. What is the ruling for them?

Answer

(1) Waiting for such a rise in prices as causes hardship to people is not permissible; a severe warning has come about it in the noble hadith. (2) Selling grain to the villagers at the rate of that time is valid, and the price should be taken from them.
