One of the "ten foremost" students of Abu Hanifa who recorded his books («عُدّ من العشرة المتقدمين من الأربعين الذين دوّنوا كتب أبي حنيفة»). According to tradition he left scholarship for asceticism and drowned his fiqh notebooks in the Euphrates.
