The Holy Quran 9:65 — Surah At-Tawbah

Arabic text

وَلَئِن سَأَلْتَهُمْ لَيَقُولُنَّ إِنَّمَا كُنَّا نَخُوضُ وَنَلْعَبُ ۚ قُلْ أَبِٱللَّهِ وَءَايَـٰتِهِۦ وَرَسُولِهِۦ كُنتُمْ تَسْتَهْزِءُونَ

Translation

If you have to ask them (the Munaafiqeen about the reason for their mockery) they will (brush it off and falsely) say, "We were only talking and joking (to pass time without intending any harm)." Say, "Were you mocking Allaah, His Aayaat and His Rasool ﷺ?" (Regardless of what excuse you give, your action cannot be condoned and constitutes the gravest of sins.)

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

ولئن سألتهم -أيها النبي- عما قالوا من القَدْح في حقك وحق أصحابك لَيَقولُنَّ: إنما كنا نتحدث بكلام لا قصد لنا به، قل لهم -أيها النبي-: أبالله عز وجل وآياته ورسوله كنتم تستهزئون؟
