The Holy Quran 9:46 — Surah At-Tawbah

Arabic text

۞ وَلَوْ أَرَادُوا۟ ٱلْخُرُوجَ لَأَعَدُّوا۟ لَهُۥ عُدَّةً وَلَـٰكِن كَرِهَ ٱللَّهُ ٱنۢبِعَاثَهُمْ فَثَبَّطَهُمْ وَقِيلَ ٱقْعُدُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلْقَـٰعِدِينَ

Translation

If they intended to proceed with you, they would have surely made some preparations, but Allaah disliked that they proceed so He held them back (causing them to make excuses) and (when they asked to be excused) they were told, "Remain with those (women, children and invalids) who remain behind!"

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

ولو أراد المنافقون الخروج معك -أيها النبي- إلى الجهاد لتأهَّبوا له بالزاد والراحلة، ولكن الله كره خروجهم فثَقُلَ عليهم الخروج قضاء وقدرًا، وإن كان أمرهم به شرعا، وقيل لهم: تخلفوا مع القاعدين من المرضى والضعفاء والنساء والصبيان.
