The Holy Quran 8:38 — Surah Al-Anfal

Arabic text

قُل لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓا۟ إِن يَنتَهُوا۟ يُغْفَرْ لَهُم مَّا قَدْ سَلَفَ وَإِن يَعُودُوا۟ فَقَدْ مَضَتْ سُنَّتُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

Translation

Tell the Kuffaar that if they desist (stop practising kufr, arrogance and accept Islaam), they will be forgiven for the past (sins they had committed). However, if they continue (practising kufr and opposing the Muslims), then the procedure of the previous nations (the manner in which We destroyed the Kuffaar of the past) have passed (before them, so that they may learn a lesson from these).

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

قل -أيها الرسول- للذين جحدوا وحدانية الله مِن مشركي قومك: إن ينزجروا عن الكفر وعداوة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، ويرجعوا إلى الإيمان بالله وحده وعدم قتال الرسول والمؤمنين، يغفر الله لهم ما سبق من الذنوب، فالإسلام يجُبُّ ما قبله. وإن يَعُدْ هؤلاء المشركون لقتالك -أيها الرسول- بعد الوقعة التي أوقعتها بهم يوم «بدر»
