The Holy Quran 7:89 — Surah Al-A'raf

Arabic text

قَدِ ٱفْتَرَيْنَا عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًا إِنْ عُدْنَا فِى مِلَّتِكُم بَعْدَ إِذْ نَجَّىٰنَا ٱللَّهُ مِنْهَا ۚ وَمَا يَكُونُ لَنَآ أَن نَّعُودَ فِيهَآ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّنَا ۚ وَسِعَ رَبُّنَا كُلَّ شَىْءٍ عِلْمًا ۚ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ تَوَكَّلْنَا ۚ رَبَّنَا ٱفْتَحْ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ قَوْمِنَا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ ٱلْفَـٰتِحِينَ

Translation

"We would surely be forging a lie against Allaah if we were to return to your religion after Allaah had rescued us from it (because this would mean that Allaah prefers us to follow your false religion). It is not (proper) for us that we return (to your religion), except if our Rabb Allaah wills. (It is a different matter if Allaah had predestined that we should return to your religion for reasons He knows best.) The knowledge of our Rabb surrounds (covers) everything and in Him alone do we trust (we trust that Allaah will keep us steadfast on His true Deen and not cause us to deviate). (However, when Shu'ayb عليه الصلاة والسلام realised that his people would not listen to him, he prayed) O our Rabb! Decide between us and our people with the truth, for You are the best of deciders (let it be known who is on the right and who is not)."

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

وقال شعيب لقومه مستدركًا: قد اختلقنا على الله الكذب إن عُدْنا إلى دينكم بعد أن أنقذنا الله منه، وليس لنا أن نتحول إلى غير دين ربنا إلا أن يشاء الله ربنا، وقد وسع ربنا كل شيء علمًا، فيعلم ما يصلح للعباد، على الله وحده اعتمادنا هداية ونصرة، ربنا احكم بيننا وبين قومنا بالحق، وأنت خير الحاكمين.
