The Holy Quran 7:142 — Surah Al-A'raf

Arabic text

۞ وَوَٰعَدْنَا مُوسَىٰ ثَلَـٰثِينَ لَيْلَةً وَأَتْمَمْنَـٰهَا بِعَشْرٍ فَتَمَّ مِيقَـٰتُ رَبِّهِۦٓ أَرْبَعِينَ لَيْلَةً ۚ وَقَالَ مُوسَىٰ لِأَخِيهِ هَـٰرُونَ ٱخْلُفْنِى فِى قَوْمِى وَأَصْلِحْ وَلَا تَتَّبِعْ سَبِيلَ ٱلْمُفْسِدِينَ

Translation

We made an appointment with Moosa عليه الصلاة والسلام for thirty nights (at Mount Toor), then ended it with (another) ten (nights) to complete (totally) his Rabb's term of forty nights (during which time Allaah spoke to Moosa عليه الصلاة والسلام and gave him the Torah). Moosa عليه الصلاة والسلام said to his brother Haroon عليه الصلاة والسلام (as he left for Mount Toor), "Take my place as leader of my people. Keep the (affairs of the people in) order and do not (ever) follow the path of those who cause corruption."

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

وواعد الله سبحانه وتعالى موسى لمناجاة ربه ثلاثين ليلة، ثم زاده في الأجل بعد ذلك عشر ليال، فتمَّ ما وَقَّتَه الله لموسى لتكليمه أربعين ليلة. وقال موسى لأخيه هارون -حين أراد المضيَّ لمناجاة ربه-: كن خليفتي في قومي حتى أرجع، وأحمِلَهم على طاعة الله وعبادته، ولا تسلكْ طريق الذين يفسدون في الأرض.
