The Holy Quran 7:12 — Surah Al-A'raf

Arabic text

قَالَ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَلَّا تَسْجُدَ إِذْ أَمَرْتُكَ ۖ قَالَ أَنَا۠ خَيْرٌ مِّنْهُ خَلَقْتَنِى مِن نَّارٍ وَخَلَقْتَهُۥ مِن طِينٍ

Translation

He (Allaah) said (to Iblees), "What stopped you that you could not make Sajdah when I commanded you?" He replied, “I am better than him (Aadam عليه الصلاة والسلام)! You have created me from fire and created him from clay." (While Iblees argued that fire is better than sand because fire burns upwards and sand falls down, he failed to realise that sand extinguishes fire and that it is constructive whereas fire is destructive.)

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

قال تعالى منكرًا على إبليس تَرْكَ السجود: ما منعك ألا تسجد إذ أمرتك؟ فقال إبليس: أنا أفضل منه خلقًا; لأني مخلوق من نار، وهو مخلوق من طين. فرأى أن النار أشرف من الطين.
