The Holy Quran 5:68 — Surah Al-Ma'idah

Arabic text

قُلْ يَـٰٓأَهْلَ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ لَسْتُمْ عَلَىٰ شَىْءٍ حَتَّىٰ تُقِيمُوا۟ ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةَ وَٱلْإِنجِيلَ وَمَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكُم مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ ۗ وَلَيَزِيدَنَّ كَثِيرًا مِّنْهُم مَّآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكَ مِن رَّبِّكَ طُغْيَـٰنًا وَكُفْرًا ۖ فَلَا تَأْسَ عَلَى ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

Translation

Say, "O People of the Book, you are not on anything (not following any proper religion or path) until you establish the (injunctions of the) Torah, the Injeel and whatever has been revealed to you by your Rabb (included in these injunctions is following Rasulullaah ﷺ)." Verily that which has been revealed to you (O Muhammad ﷺ) from your Rabb shall be a cause for increasing the defiance (sinful acts) and kufr of many of them. So do not grieve (do not be sorrowful or lose hope) over the nation of Kaafiroon (when they do not accept your teachings).

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

قل -أيها الرسول- لليهود والنصارى: إنكم لستم على حظٍّ من الدين ما دمتم لم تعملوا بما في التوراة والإنجيل، وما جاءكم به محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم من القرآن، وإن كثيرًا من أهل الكتاب لا يزيدهم إنزالُ القرآن إليك إلا تجبُّرًا وجحودًا، فهم يحسدونك; لأن الله بعثك بهذه الرسالة الخاتمة، التي بَيَّن فيها معايبهم، فلا تحزن -أيها الرسول- على تكذيبهم لك.
