The Holy Quran 5:18 — Surah Al-Ma'idah

Arabic text

وَقَالَتِ ٱلْيَهُودُ وَٱلنَّصَـٰرَىٰ نَحْنُ أَبْنَـٰٓؤُا۟ ٱللَّهِ وَأَحِبَّـٰٓؤُهُۥ ۚ قُلْ فَلِمَ يُعَذِّبُكُم بِذُنُوبِكُم ۖ بَلْ أَنتُم بَشَرٌ مِّمَّنْ خَلَقَ ۚ يَغْفِرُ لِمَن يَشَآءُ وَيُعَذِّبُ مَن يَشَآءُ ۚ وَلِلَّهِ مُلْكُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا ۖ وَإِلَيْهِ ٱلْمَصِيرُ

Translation

The Jews and the Christians say, “We are (like) the sons (children) of Allaah and His loved ones!" Say (to them), "(If your claim is true) Then why will He punish you for your sins (as is the case with all other people)? (Like everyone else,) You are only humans from those that He has created (and nothing more). He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills. To Allaah belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, and to Him is the return (of every individual, where each one will be tried according to one's merit)."

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

وزعم اليهود والنصارى أنهم أبناء الله وأحباؤه، قل لهم -أيها الرسول-: فَلأيِّ شيء يعذِّبكم بذنوبكم؟ فلو كنتم أحبابه ما عذبكم، فالله لا يحب إلا من أطاعه، وقل لهم: بل أنتم خلقٌ مثلُ سائر بني آدم، إن أحسنتُم جوزيتم بإحسانكم خيرا، وإن أسَأْتُم جوزيتم بإساءتكم شرًّا، فالله يغفر لمن يشاء، ويعذب من يشاء، وهو مالك الملك، يُصَرِّفه كما يشاء، وإليه المرجع، فيحكم بين…
