The Holy Quran 58:4 — Surah Al-Mujadila

Arabic text

فَمَن لَّمْ يَجِدْ فَصِيَامُ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ مِن قَبْلِ أَن يَتَمَآسَّا ۖ فَمَن لَّمْ يَسْتَطِعْ فَإِطْعَامُ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ لِتُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ ۚ وَتِلْكَ حُدُودُ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَلِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ

Translation

The one who cannot do this (is unable to free a slave) should fast for two consecutive months (60 days) before the couple can (even) touch each other. The one who cannot even do this (fasting for two months) should feed sixty poor people. (Besides discouraging Zihaar and securing forgiveness for the husband,) This (penalty for Zihaar) is (ordered) so that you may believe (so that you strengthen your conviction) in (the injunctions detailed to you by) Allaah and His Rasool ﷺ. These are the limits set by Allaah and the Kaafiroon (those who disregard the limits set by Allaah) shall have a painful punishment.

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

فمن لم يجد رقبة يُعتقها، فالواجب عليه صيام شهرين متواليين من قبل أن يطأ زوجه، فمن لم يستطع صيام الشهرين لعذر شرعي، فعليه أن يطعم ستين مسكينًا ممن لا يملكون ما يكفيهم ويسد حاجتهم ما يشبعهم، ذلك الذي بينَّاه لكم من أحكام الظهار; من أجل أن تصدِّقوا بالله وتتبعوا رسوله وتعملوا بما شرعه الله، وتتركوا ما كنتم عليه في جاهليتكم، وتلك الأحكام المذكورة هي أوامر الله…
