The Holy Quran 58:3 — Surah Al-Mujadila

Arabic text

وَٱلَّذِينَ يُظَـٰهِرُونَ مِن نِّسَآئِهِمْ ثُمَّ يَعُودُونَ لِمَا قَالُوا۟ فَتَحْرِيرُ رَقَبَةٍ مِّن قَبْلِ أَن يَتَمَآسَّا ۚ ذَٰلِكُمْ تُوعَظُونَ بِهِۦ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرٌ

Translation

Those who practise Zihaar and then wish to retract what they say, they will have to free a (male or female, Muslim or non-Muslim) slave before the couple can (even) touch each other (before this, they cannot even do something which may lead to intercourse). This is the advice Allaah gives you and (if a person indulges in intercourse with his wife before freeing the slave, Allaah will punish him for this transgression because) Allaah is Informed of what you do.

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

والذين يحرِّمون نساءهم على أنفسهم بالمظاهَرة منهن، ثم يرجعون عن قولهم ويعزمون على وطء نسائهم، فعلى الزوج المظاهِر -والحالة هذه- كفارة التحريم، وهي عتق رقبة مؤمنة عبد أو أمة قبل أن يطأ زوجته التي ظاهر منها، ذلكم هو حكم الله -فيمن ظاهر مِن زوجته- توعظون به، أيها المؤمنون; لكي لا تقعوا في الظهار وقول الزور، وتُكَفِّروا إن وقعتم فيه، ولكي لا تعودوا إليه، والله…
