The Holy Quran 4:89 — Surah An-Nisa

Arabic text

وَدُّوا۟ لَوْ تَكْفُرُونَ كَمَا كَفَرُوا۟ فَتَكُونُونَ سَوَآءً ۖ فَلَا تَتَّخِذُوا۟ مِنْهُمْ أَوْلِيَآءَ حَتَّىٰ يُهَاجِرُوا۟ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ فَإِن تَوَلَّوْا۟ فَخُذُوهُمْ وَٱقْتُلُوهُمْ حَيْثُ وَجَدتُّمُوهُمْ ۖ وَلَا تَتَّخِذُوا۟ مِنْهُمْ وَلِيًّا وَلَا نَصِيرًا

Translation

They (the Munaafiqeen) wish that you should commit kufr as they have done, so that you may be the same (like them). So do not choose any of them as your friends (even if they claim to be Muslims) until they make Hijrah (forsake their homelands) in the path (for the pleasure) of Allaah (thereby protecting the sincerity of their Imaan). If they turn away (from Islaam and become apostates), then grab hold of them and put them to death wherever you find them. Do not make any of them your friend or assistant...

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

تمنَّى المنافقون لكم -أيها المؤمنون-، لو تنكرون حقيقة ما آمنت به قلوبكم، مثلما أنكروه بقلوبهم، فتكونون معهم في الإنكار سواء، فلا تتخذوا منهم أصفياء لكم، حتى يهاجروا في سبيل الله، برهانًا على صدق إيمانهم، فإن أعرضوا عما دعوا إليه، فخذوهم أينما كانوا واقتلوهم، ولا تتخذوا منهم وليّاً من دون الله ولا نصيرًا تستنصرونه به.
