The Holy Quran 4:43 — Surah An-Nisa

Arabic text

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَقْرَبُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَأَنتُمْ سُكَـٰرَىٰ حَتَّىٰ تَعْلَمُوا۟ مَا تَقُولُونَ وَلَا جُنُبًا إِلَّا عَابِرِى سَبِيلٍ حَتَّىٰ تَغْتَسِلُوا۟ ۚ وَإِن كُنتُم مَّرْضَىٰٓ أَوْ عَلَىٰ سَفَرٍ أَوْ جَآءَ أَحَدٌ مِّنكُم مِّنَ ٱلْغَآئِطِ أَوْ لَـٰمَسْتُمُ ٱلنِّسَآءَ فَلَمْ تَجِدُوا۟ مَآءً فَتَيَمَّمُوا۟ صَعِيدًا طَيِّبًا فَٱمْسَحُوا۟ بِوُجُوهِكُمْ وَأَيْدِيكُمْ ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَفُوًّا غَفُورًا

Translation

O you who have Imaan! Do not come near salaah when you are intoxicated (this leads to ignorance and then following of whims and fancies) until you are (sober and) aware of what you are saying (in your salaah), and when you are impure (which leads to lust, then one cannot differentiate between truth and falsehood do) not (approach salaah) until you take a bath, except for the traveller (who cannot use water or cannot find any to bath with). If you are ill (and unable to use water), on journey, returning from the toilet or from touching (cohabiting with) your wives, and you do not find any water, then perform Tayammum with clean soil, passing your hands over your faces and arms (to show complete humility). Verily Allaah is Most Pardoning, Most Forgiving (He dislikes that His servants should experience hardship).

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

يا أيها الذين صدَّقوا بالله ورسوله وعملوا بشرعه، لا تقربوا الصلاة ولا تقوموا إليها حال السكر حتى تميزوا وتعلموا ما تقولون (وقد كان هذا قبل التحريم القاطع للخمر في كل حال) ، ولا تقربوا الصلاة إن أصابكم الحدث الأكبر، ولا تقربوا كذلك مواضعها وهي المساجد، إلا من كان منكم مجتازًا من باب إلى باب، حتى تتطهروا بالاغتسال.
