The Holy Quran 4:24 — Surah An-Nisa

Arabic text

۞ وَٱلْمُحْصَنَـٰتُ مِنَ ٱلنِّسَآءِ إِلَّا مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَـٰنُكُمْ ۖ كِتَـٰبَ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ ۚ وَأُحِلَّ لَكُم مَّا وَرَآءَ ذَٰلِكُمْ أَن تَبْتَغُوا۟ بِأَمْوَٰلِكُم مُّحْصِنِينَ غَيْرَ مُسَـٰفِحِينَ ۚ فَمَا ٱسْتَمْتَعْتُم بِهِۦ مِنْهُنَّ فَـَٔاتُوهُنَّ أُجُورَهُنَّ فَرِيضَةً ۚ وَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِيمَا تَرَٰضَيْتُم بِهِۦ مِنۢ بَعْدِ ٱلْفَرِيضَةِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَلِيمًا حَكِيمًا

Translation

(Also forbidden for you to marry are) Married women except those (slave women and captives) whom you own. Allaah has ordained (these laws) for you. Besides these (women mentioned above), all other women are lawful for you (to marry), (provided) that you seek (their hands in marriage) with your wealth (by paying the dowry) as properly married men (with the intention of preserving your chastity) and not as fornicators (not merely to gratify your desires). Give the specified dowry to those (wives) from whom you derive benefit (with whom you have had intercourse). There is no sin (no pressure) on you should you (husband and wife) agree on something else (a larger or smaller amount of dowry without pressure from either party) after the specified amount (has been set). Verily Allaah is All Knowing, The Wise (He knows best what is beneficial or harmful for His creation).

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

ويحرم عليكم نكاح المتزوجات من النساء، إلا مَنْ سَبَيْتُم منهن في الجهاد، فإنه يحل لكم نكاحهن، بعد استبراء أرحامهن بحيضة، كتب الله عليكم تحريم نكاح هؤلاء، وأجاز لكم نكاح مَن سواهن، ممَّا أحله الله لكم أن تطلبوا بأموالكم العفة عن اقتراف الحرام.
