The Holy Quran 4:129 — Surah An-Nisa

Arabic text

وَلَن تَسْتَطِيعُوٓا۟ أَن تَعْدِلُوا۟ بَيْنَ ٱلنِّسَآءِ وَلَوْ حَرَصْتُمْ ۖ فَلَا تَمِيلُوا۟ كُلَّ ٱلْمَيْلِ فَتَذَرُوهَا كَٱلْمُعَلَّقَةِ ۚ وَإِن تُصْلِحُوا۟ وَتَتَّقُوا۟ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ غَفُورًا رَّحِيمًا

Translation

You will never be able to maintain perfect justice (in sharing your love) between (your) wives however much you may desire to do so (because no person has complete control over the inclinations of the heart). However, do not ignore any of them totally, leaving her suspended (leaving her like one who is neither married nor single because although legally married, she will be without love like a single woman). If you make peace (by distributing your wealth and time equally between your wives) and adopt Taqwa, then surely Allaah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful (He will forgive you for your heart's additional inclination to one wife over another.)

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

ولن تقدروا -أيها الرجال- على تحقيق العدل التام بين النساء في المحبة وميل القلب، مهما بذلتم في ذلك من الجهد، فلا تعرضوا عن المرغوب عنها كل الإعراض، فتتركوها كالمرأة التي ليست بذات زوج ولا هي مطلقة فتأثموا. وإن تصلحوا أعمالكم فتعدلوا في قَسْمكم بين زوجاتكم، وتراقبوا الله تعالى وتخشوه فيهن، فإن الله تعالى كان غفورًا لعباده، رحيمًا بهم.
