The Holy Quran 3:156 — Surah Ali 'Imran

Arabic text

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَكُونُوا۟ كَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَقَالُوا۟ لِإِخْوَٰنِهِمْ إِذَا ضَرَبُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ أَوْ كَانُوا۟ غُزًّى لَّوْ كَانُوا۟ عِندَنَا مَا مَاتُوا۟ وَمَا قُتِلُوا۟ لِيَجْعَلَ ٱللَّهُ ذَٰلِكَ حَسْرَةً فِى قُلُوبِهِمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ يُحْىِۦ وَيُمِيتُ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرٌ

Translation

O you who have Imaan! Do not be like the Kuffaar (the Munaafiqeen) who say about their brothers when they travel in the land (and pass away) or are fighting soldiers (who lose their lives in Jihaad), "If they were with us, they would not have died nor been killed!" (Do not speak like them because the only result of their statement is) That Allaah shall make this (statement) a source of regret in their hearts (when they realise the error of the statement especially in the Aakhirah). Allaah gives life and death (this is a basic belief), and Allaah sees all that you do." (everyone receive what is due)

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

يا أيها الذين صدَّقوا الله ورسوله وعملوا بشرعه، لا تُشابهوا الكافرين الذين لا يؤمنون بربهم، فهم يقولون لإخوانهم من أهل الكفر إذا خرجوا يبحثون في أرض الله عن معاشهم أو كانوا مع الغزاة المقاتلين فماتوا أو قُتِلوا: لو لم يخرج هؤلاء ولم يقاتلوا وأقاموا معنا ما ماتوا وما قُتلوا.
