The Holy Quran 39:38 — Surah Az-Zumar

Arabic text

وَلَئِن سَأَلْتَهُم مَّنْ خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ لَيَقُولُنَّ ٱللَّهُ ۚ قُلْ أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ إِنْ أَرَادَنِىَ ٱللَّهُ بِضُرٍّ هَلْ هُنَّ كَـٰشِفَـٰتُ ضُرِّهِۦٓ أَوْ أَرَادَنِى بِرَحْمَةٍ هَلْ هُنَّ مُمْسِكَـٰتُ رَحْمَتِهِۦ ۚ قُلْ حَسْبِىَ ٱللَّهُ ۖ عَلَيْهِ يَتَوَكَّلُ ٱلْمُتَوَكِّلُونَ

Translation

Undoubtedly, if you ask them (the Mushrikeen) who created the heavens and the earth, they will certainly reply, "Allaah!" Say, "Tell me about those whom you worship besides Allaah. If Allaah wishes that any harm should afflict me, can they avert (prevent) the harm? Or if Allaah wishes to shower mercy upon me, are they able to restrain (stop) His mercy?" Say, "Allaah is enough for me, and only in Him should those who have trust place their trust." (Although the Mushrikeen worshipped many idols, they acknowledged that it was Allaah Who created the universe and Who had control over everything.)

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

ولئن سألت -أيها الرسول- هؤلاء المشركين الذين يعبدون غير الله: مَن خلق هذه السموات والأرض؟ ليقولُنَّ: خلقهنَّ الله، فهم يُقِرُّون بالخالق. قل لهم: هل تستطيع هذه الآلهة التي تشركونها مع الله أن تُبْعِدَ عني أذى قدَّره الله عليَّ، أو تزيلَ مكروهًا لَحِق بي؟ وهل تستطيع أن تمنع نفعَا يسَّره الله لي، أو تحبس رحمة الله عني؟ إنهم سيقولون: لا تستطيع ذلك.
