The Holy Quran 33:15 — Surah Al-Ahzab

Arabic text

وَلَقَدْ كَانُوا۟ عَـٰهَدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مِن قَبْلُ لَا يُوَلُّونَ ٱلْأَدْبَـٰرَ ۚ وَكَانَ عَهْدُ ٱللَّهِ مَسْـُٔولًا

Translation

They (desert the Muslims even though they) had certainly made a pledge with Allaah before (the battle) that they will never turn their backs. (They fail to realise that) A pledge made with Allaah is answerable. (They will be taken to task for breaking this pledge.)

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

ولقد كان هؤلاء المنافقون عاهدوا الله على يد رسوله من قبل غزوة الخندق، لا يفرُّون إن شهدوا الحرب، ولا يتأخرون إذا دعوا إلى الجهاد، ولكنهم خانوا عهدهم، وسيحاسبهم الله على ذلك، ويسألهم عن ذلك العهد، وكان عهد الله مسؤولا عنه، محاسَبًا عليه.
