The Holy Quran 2:87 — Surah Al-Baqarah

Arabic text

وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَا مُوسَى ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَقَفَّيْنَا مِنۢ بَعْدِهِۦ بِٱلرُّسُلِ ۖ وَءَاتَيْنَا عِيسَى ٱبْنَ مَرْيَمَ ٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ وَأَيَّدْنَـٰهُ بِرُوحِ ٱلْقُدُسِ ۗ أَفَكُلَّمَا جَآءَكُمْ رَسُولٌۢ بِمَا لَا تَهْوَىٰٓ أَنفُسُكُمُ ٱسْتَكْبَرْتُمْ فَفَرِيقًا كَذَّبْتُمْ وَفَرِيقًا تَقْتُلُونَ

Translation

Undoubtedly We gave the Book (the Torah) to Moosa عليه الصلاة والسلام and We sent messengers after him (Moosa عليه الصلاة والسلام) one after another. We gave clear signs (miracles such as bringing the dead back to life, curing blind people and people who suffered from leprosy) to Isa عليه السلام, the son of Maryam, and strengthened him with the Roohul Qudus (the angel Jibra'eel عليه السلام who was with Isa wherever he went). Why is it that every time a messenger came to you with what did not appeal to your desires, you behaved arrogantly? So you denied a party (of the messengers, among them the likes of Isa عليه السلام and Muhammad ﷺ) and killed another (party, among them Zakariyya عليه السلام and Yahya عليه السلام).

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

ولقد أعطينا موسى التوراة، وأتبعناه برسل من بني إسرائيل، وأعطينا عيسى ابن مريم المعجزات الواضحات، وقوَّيناه بجبريل عليه السلام. أفكلما جاءكم رسول بوحي من عند الله لا يوافق أهواءكم، استعليتم عليه، فكذَّبتم فريقًا وتقتلون فريقًا؟
