The Holy Quran 17:83 — Surah Al-Isra

Arabic text

وَإِذَآ أَنْعَمْنَا عَلَى ٱلْإِنسَـٰنِ أَعْرَضَ وَنَـَٔا بِجَانِبِهِۦ ۖ وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ كَانَ يَـُٔوسًا

Translation

When We grant favours to man (the Kaafir), he turns away (from thanking Us) and, changing direction, he goes far. And when hardship (poverty, illness) afflicts him, he becomes despondent (loses hope because he has no faith in Allaah).

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

وإذا أنعمنا على الإنسان من حيث هو بمال وعافية ونحوهما، تولَّى وتباعد عن طاعة ربه، وإذا أصابته شدة مِن فقر أو مرض كان قنوطًا؛ لأنه لا يثق بفضل الله تعالى، إلا من عصم الله في حالتي سرَّائه وضرَّائه.
