The Holy Quran 17:12 — Surah Al-Isra

Arabic text

وَجَعَلْنَا ٱلَّيْلَ وَٱلنَّهَارَ ءَايَتَيْنِ ۖ فَمَحَوْنَآ ءَايَةَ ٱلَّيْلِ وَجَعَلْنَآ ءَايَةَ ٱلنَّهَارِ مُبْصِرَةً لِّتَبْتَغُوا۟ فَضْلًا مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ وَلِتَعْلَمُوا۟ عَدَدَ ٱلسِّنِينَ وَٱلْحِسَابَ ۚ وَكُلَّ شَىْءٍ فَصَّلْنَـٰهُ تَفْصِيلًا

Translation

We have made the night and the day two signs (that demonstrate Our might). We have darkened the sign of the night (allowing you to rest peacefully) and made the sign of the day bright so that you may seek Allaah's bounty (engage in earning your livelihood during the daylight) and (so that by the passing of days you may) know the count of years and (so that you may know how to make other types of) calculation (such as calculating months, weeks, generations and other periods). We have explained everything (to you) in (distinct) detail.

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

وجعلنا الليل والنهار علامتين دالَّتين على وحدانيتنا وقدرتنا، فمَحَوْنا علامة الليل -وهي القمر- وجعلنا علامة النهار -وهي الشمس- مضيئة؛ ليبصر الإنسان في ضوء النهار كيف يتصرف في شؤون معاشه، ويخلد في الليل إلى السكن والراحة، وليعلم الناس -من تعاقب الليل والنهار- عدد السنين وحساب الأشهر والأيام، فيرتبون عليها ما يشاؤون من مصالحهم. وكل شيء بيَّناه تبيينًا كافيًا.
