Details of Prompting the Imam When He Forgets

Question

If the imam stumbles over an ayah during prayer and the muqtadi prompts him — will the prayer be valid or invalidated? And should the prompt be withheld once a length equivalent to three ayahs has already been recited?

Answer

If the imam has stumbled after reciting enough to proceed to ruku, he should perform ruku. If he stumbled before that point, he should recite another surah he knows and not remain stuck at the same place. It is makruh for the imam to repeatedly attempt the same passage where he has stumbled.
